The Lakewood City Schools - 1984: A Compilation of Histories

Introduction

This compilation of the histories of the Lakewood Public Schools was organized, edited, and produced by Joseph Wilson, former teacher, principal and personnel director (1947-1979) and Eleanor Chidester, former Clerk-Treasurer of the Lakewood Board of Education and Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools (1956-1972). It appeared in print form in 1984.

Margaret Manor Butler, Lakewood historian, contributed a distinguished account of the development of the Lakewood Schools from the 1800's to 1948 in Chapter XII of her book The Lakewood Story.

George W. Grill, former Assistant Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools, edited a paper on the history of the Lakewood Schools by Charles P. Lynch, former Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools (1910-1927). The paper appeared in a book by E. George Lindstrom, entitled The Story of Lakewood.

George W. Grill, the Lakewood Schools' first Assistant Superintendent (1928 to 1939) wrote this account of the development of the Lakewood Schools from 1911 to 1936. The article appeared in the Lakewood Suburban News and Herald newspaper, July 17, 1936.

In 1929, Julius E. Warren, Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools, included The Development of the Lakewood Public Schools, 1871-1929 in his Annual Report to the Board of Education.

John Koprowski and David Powell, Advanced Placement American History students at Lakewood High School, under the direction of Stephen Bennett, teacher, wrote The History of the Lakewood Schools during the 1977-1978 school year. In 1979 Dr. William Vejdovec, Director of Instruction, edited the Koprowski/Powell history for use in the Social Studies curriculum.

Charles P. Lynch, Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools (1910-1927), contributed this article, Innovations in Education, which appeared in the Lakewood Press newspaper on March 7, 1918.

Robert L. Short, principal, Lakewood High School (1918-1920), contributed this article, Lakewood High School, which appeared in the Lakewood Press newspaper on March 7, 1918.

Luella Sanborn Wise wrote this article, First Schools, which appeared in the Early Days of Lakewood, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, 1936.

Will Lippert, Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools (1881-1888), wrote and read this paper, Lakewood High School, at the 50th Anniversary - Lakewood High School observance.

The Summary of the History of Recreation in the City of Lakewood was completed in 1949 under the direction of Charles A. Foster, director, Adult Education and Recreation (1936-1967).

Dr. Richard A. Boyd, Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools, researched and wrote the chronology of the disposition of the Wilson School property (between Detroit Road and Franklin Blvd., Warren Road and St. Charles Avenue). Wilson School, originally called the "(second separate) High School," was constructed in 1904 and razed in 1947.

The "Early Settler" has been the logo of the Lakewood Schools since it was created on the facade of the Lakewood High School Civic Auditorium in 1954.
